The Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotechnology Building is home to the Biofrontiers Institute, the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the Division of Biochemistry. It houses more than 600 faculty, staff and students from nine departments and divisions in 330,000 square feet.
Research space in the new building was designed specifically to create an environment that promotes collaboration between scientists via “neighborhoods” connected by “main street” corridors. A café, meeting and conference areas, a 200-seat auditorium and two large teaching spaces help to drive productive interactions.
The design for the Biotechnology Building project has been rated in the LEED Gold point range. It also incorporates “Labs 21” guidelines for all laboratory and accessory spaces. All mechanical and electrical systems incorporate significant energy saving and energy recovering models.
Designed by HDR Architects, in association with Robert A. M. Stern Architects, the building was funded, to date, by $65 million in private support, as well as public and university support.
